Messages in Watercolor
A few years after arriving in Penticton ShawnSky Farmer took to take some art classes. One was a watercolor class with Dianne Bersea. Dianne had a wonderful way of not taking the 'work' so seriously. "It's just paper and water," she said... or at least that's what is remembered. One exercise involved covering a canvas randomly and with abandon several chosen colors. After the paint dried one might find an an object, a tree, or flower or anything really, ready to pop out.
We love this exercise and have variations of it called Automatic Painting, Intuitive Art or Messages in Watercolor. Here are a few of our favorites -- even some early experimentation. Some were planned and symbolic messages popped out unexpectedly. With others, the intention from the start was to see what the watercolor revealed.
