Back in February I took an on-line class called Intuitive Art at Abyssimo Mixed Media School. The first exercise was fun and relaxing and didn’t involve much mental input. The pencils and pens did what they did. They called out to me and pulled and pushed and circled around on the paper.
I was a bit taken back by the result. It didn’t meet my desired expectations of beauty. Simultaneously, the result intrigued me. I wanted to see what sort of symbolism was expressing my apparently weird psyche, so displayed it on a music stand in my living room for a few months.
The drawing was complete February 25, 2020. A month later my intuition said, ahhh. There you go. This is connected to what is going on now in the world with the Coronavirus. But the drawing didn’t show the same virus image as we saw in the media. What was up with that? Another month went by (while I ignored the drawing.)

Finally, more revelation.
The blue circles represent the droplets which carry the contagion. The purple is ultraviolet light. After that dawned on me, I found this article about a former NASA scientist who is considering UV light to be a possible solution to killing the virus.
The virus is showing up in red, though not fully formed and not like other images. And that’s ok. I think the drawing is more about the spread of the droplets.
There is a barrier on the left side. I felt like it was a river while drawing it. Certainly a barrier of some kind. Is it part of a surgical mask? Or just symbolic of the ability of barriers to keep the virus from spreading.
The other bugs and yellow ribbons? Just part of the big soup of hidden materials we can’t see.
Originally I wasn’t going to post this, but after I found some meaning in it for myself, I thought why not? The meaning for me is simply how connected we can be to what is happening even when we are not conscious of it. Sure there were stories about the virus in February, but it wasn’t really big on my own radar until later.
Besides an exercise of Intuitive Art, it’s another example of #weirdwomanart.

WeirdWoman, the drawing connects to me personally. The river on the left is my refuge, in soul and on the actual land where I live in New Mexico. Whatever is going on way up the pasture in the houses and village and world have little import once I get to the Chama River, Wrestling River in Tewa, where I can let the river goddess do the wrestling with the challenges of humanity.
I’ve marveled at the beauty in sights that we have been taught to lament. In New Mexico, for example, some of the most amazing natural structures have been formed by fierce wind and weather, erosion. In other contexts, we are trying to prevent erosion.
Our bodies are full of viruses, microbes, parasites, and an amazing number of living entities that make up our organism’s whole. Lots of factors have collaborated to make this virus deadly for some. And yet viruses are beautiful, as I see in your drawing. In other contexts, though, we fear the virus.
So many conundrums in this here world.
Thank you for posting this!
Weird might be another description for the “New Normal” ?
Thank you for your “on beyond” thinking “Weird Woman Artist”!
Your thinking is outside the box ; others hide inside the box
in fear! You are cutting a window in that box to help others
understand what’s on beyond the “old Normal” !
Thank you for the “windows” 😊
That’s such a nice thing to say. Touched me. Thank you.
